A reliable local system
Zigbee communication between the bulbs and the bridge is fast and stable. The bridge also exposes the lights to Matter, which makes them usable across the major smart-home platforms.

Do the bulbs need the bridge?
The bridge is needed for HomeKit, Matter and reliable schedules. Bluetooth control is possible without it on newer Hue bulbs, but with fewer features.
Can I add more bulbs later?
Yes. The bridge supports up to 50 lights and 12 accessories.
